different ways, which can lead to arguments. If you’re having problems communicating with your partner, the experts at Long Island Counseling are here to help. In today’s post, we will provide you with a few tips that will help you communicate with your partner more effectively, but if you’re still having problems, don’t hesitate to give us a call to schedule an appointment at Long Island Counseling.

Address Feelings as Soon as Possible

You’ve probably heard it said more than once that you shouldn’t bottle up your feelings. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. However, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t true, especially when you’re in a relationship. If you feel angry about something or you didn’t like how a situation was handled, be sure to express those feelings with your partner right away. Letting those feelings sit and stew for days or even years can lead to a bigger problem and have your partner wondering why you didn’t say something right away.

Don’t Interrupt

Whether you’re talking through an issue or having a conversation, try to avoid interrupting your partner. It can be difficult when you get excited or angry to not jump into the conversation while your partner is talking, but it’s important that you let them speak. You want to show your loved one that you value what they have to say and that you are actively listening. Interrupting can make them feel as though you don’t care about what they are saying.

Give Your Full Attention

In addition to not interrupting your partner, it’s important that you give them your full attention. There’s no question that you want to be heard when you are speaking with your partner, so it’s vital that you give them the same courtesy. Show that you are giving them your attention and listening attentively by putting down your phone or turning off the TV or other electronic devices when they are speaking. You can also use nonverbal cues such as tilting your head or nodding to show that you are listening.

Use “I” Messages

One common mistake that couples make when they are arguing or having a deep discussion is that they phrase their sentences so that it sounds like they are blaming the other person. You can easily avoid this by structuring your words and starting with the phrase “I feel.” When you start by saying “I feel,” you change your sentence to express how certain actions or words make you feel instead of blaming the other person.

Ask Questions

There’s no way to tell how your partner is feeling, thinking, or why they perform a certain task one way instead of another, that’s why it’s important that you take the time to ask about things that you are unsure about. Not only will asking your partner about their feelings, thoughts, and actions show that you care, but it will also give you the answers that you are curious about. You should never try to assume, because it can lead to miscommunication. If you’re unsure about something, take the time to ask your partner about it, and you may find that they will happily explain.
