HOW DOES COMPREHENSIVE SEX THERAPY WORK?  Good sex therapy offers you help with understanding and overcoming most sexual dysfunctioning.  Sex therapy relies exclusively on talking with the therapist.  Sex therapy should not be confused with sexual surrogacy.  (A sexual surrogate is someone hired by an individual experiencing sexual dysfunction.  The surrogate provides direct sexual activity with the goal of improving the quality of the individual’s future sexual experiences.)

HOW TO TALK ABOUT SEX AND SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION?  Your therapist is a trained professional who is experienced treating individuals who suffer with various types of sexual dysfunction.   She will gently guide you through the treatment, asking you important questions that will enable her to learn about your personal and sexual history, and the history and evolution of your complaint.  Everything proceeds slowly and carefully, always with your comfort and safety in mind and always making sure that it’s as easy as possible for you to be open and to share your deepest concerns.

In addition to exploring your sexual history, your therapist will ask you about your current sexual issues and problems and will want to learn about your specific concerns.  She will ask you details about what happens before, during and after sex, and want to hear about your fantasies, habits, and preferences.  She will want to understand your attitude toward sex and sexual behavior and you will have a chance to share with her your feelings, questions, and thoughts about sex.   She will also want to learn about your partner, if you have one.

As the treatment progresses, she may give you exercises to do at home, in the privacy of your own bedroom.  You may be asked about your “homework” when you return for your next session.  In this way, you and your therapist can get to know even the smallest details about the issue, and can work together in helping you resolve your sexual difficulty and restoring you to healthy functioning.
