The new year is almost here, and you may already be giving your New Year’s resolutions some thought. Most people resolve to improve their fitness routine, lose weight, or even tackle some big goal that has eluded them in the past. However, if you are someone who has struggled with your mental health, then it may be a good time to improve your mental wellness in the new year.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to start going to therapy, then Long Island Counseling is here to help. We offer a variety of counseling services, including anxiety counseling, couple’s therapy, individual counseling, and more. Explore our website to learn more about the services we offer, and schedule an appointment to start your new year off right!

Get Enough Sleep

You would be surprised at how much a good night’s sleep can help improve your attitude and your mental health. If you’re looking for an easy way to improve your mental health, consider changing your sleep habits. Take a look at your current sleep schedule and see if there are a few small changes you can make to help you get a more restful sleep. For example, if you get up early in the morning and go to bed late at night, consider going to sleep a little earlier. It may take some getting used to, but once you’re in the habit of getting at least seven hours of sleep at night, you may notice that you have more energy and have improved mental health.

Take a Break From Social Media

As much as you like to keep up with your friends and family members on social media, this convenient tool can have a negative effect on your mental health. What most people don’t take into account is that most social media profiles only picture the best side of people. For example, you may see adorable pictures of your best friend and their significant other and another friend’s tropical vacation. People don’t post about the less than perfect moments of their lives, and while you’re scrolling through your feed, seeing all of those great posts can lead to some negative thoughts.

Make a commitment to yourself to take a break from social media for a while. You can do this by limiting your exposure to certain apps or by deleting them altogether. Not only will this eliminate the constant stream of posts and photos, but it will also force you to connect with people in-person.

Remove Toxic People

Toxic people are hard to eliminate. In fact, you may not even know a person is toxic until they have already become an established part of your life. However, it’s important to remember that just because someone is a relative or a long-time friend doesn’t mean that you are required to keep them in your life, especially if they make you feel like less than you are.

Use the start of a new year as a chance to evaluate the people in your life. Is there someone in your life who always takes but never gives back? Does this person constantly put you down when you try to express your goals? Toxic people can affect you negatively in a variety of different ways, and removing them or limiting your time spent with them may seem easier said than done. However, once you free yourself from their toxic energy, you won’t believe how much better you feel.
