SAFE ∙ SUPPORTIVE ∙ NON-JUDGEMENTAL TREATMENT

DISCOMFORT:  Struggling with gender questions often means having a persistent discomfort with one’s assigned sex, and a strong desire to be, or the insistence that one is, of the other sex. Adults and adolescents with this disorder are uncomfortable being regarded by others as, or functioning in society as a member of their designate sex. To varying degrees, they adopt the behavior, dress, and mannerisms of the other sex. These individuals may spend time cross-dressing. In a suffering individual, his or her sexual activity may be generally constrained by the preference that their partners neither see nor touch their genitals.

POSSIBLE INTERFERENCE AND DISTRESS:  For adolescents and adults questioning their gender identity, their preoccupation with cross-gender wishes often interferes with ordinary activities, curtailing relationships and functioning in school and work. Many individuals suffering become socially isolated, leading to low self-esteem and a narrowing of activities to those that lessen gender distress.
